George Smith


George is the co-anchor of 27 News at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. He comes to Madison from Chicago where he worked as a morning news anchor and then a sports anchor at WFLD.

Smith grew up in New York City. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover, Oberlin College and earned his master’s degree at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. A former alumni trustee at Andover, he’s currently a member of the Oberlin College Heisman Club, which supports the college’s athletic department.

Smith earned All-America honors in the 100-meter dash during his senior year at Oberlin College, finishing third in the nation at the NCAA Division III championships. He was elected to Oberlin’s Athletics Hall of Fame. He also is a member of the Oberlin College President’s Advisory Council and is part of the college’s mentoring program.

Smith has anchored and reported news and sports in New York, Boston, Houston, Cleveland and Portland, Oregon. He spent 10 years as a correspondent for ESPN covering stories for SportsCenter and Outside the Lines. He covered four Olympic Games and major national stories, including the legal case involving Kobe Bryant, Michael Vick, Roger Clemens and the Duke lacrosse team.

Smith loves to travel and has been to 49 states (only Alaska left). He’s also met three U.S. presidents.

He met his wife, Beth, in Madison. They have two children
