NEW YORK (AP) — A firetruck bearing the coffin of a New York City firefighter killed in the line of duty has inched away from a Brooklyn church amid the mournful sound of bagpipes.
Thousands of firefighters in dress uniform stood silently at attention Friday along the street outside the funeral for Steven Pollard of Ladder Company 170.
Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro (NY’-groh) said “bravery was in his blood.”
Mayor Bill De Blasio eulogized Pollard on behalf “of a grieving city.”
Pollard was running toward a car accident late Sunday when he slipped into a gap between bridge spans and plunged about 50 feet (15 meters).
The 30-year-old had followed his father and brother into the Fire Department of New York just a year and a half ago.
