MADISON (WKOW) — A southern Wisconsin retiree goes above and beyond when it comes to volunteering at the Madison Senior Center and for that, she’s being recognized with a Jefferson Award.

“I have a rule of life, or a motto. It’s called ‘we’re all in this together,'” said Jefferson Award Winner Kathy Whitt.

Whitt has served on three different committees at the center, including the mayor appointed Committee on Aging. Along with her leadership roles, she likes hanging up art throughout the building. She spends dozens of hours each week making sure the senior center is an enjoyable place.

“This is a place where old people can get to know each other and be engaged and not veg out the way some people think retirees do,” said Whitt. “It’s a bunch of really active, alive people here and I like being around people like that.”

Kathy never asks for recognition, but the workers at the senior center were eager to give it to her.

“She’s always willing to volunteer,” said Volunteer Coordinator John Weichelt. “Every time there’s a special event that I need a volunteer for, Kathy’s there.”

Kathy says she doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.

“I volunteer because I think it helps everybody,” she said.
