MIDDLETON (WKOW) — The Dane County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man for his fifth OWI after he ran away from the scene of a hit-and-run accident.

It happened about 7 p.m. Wednesday near Caribou Court and Mineral Point Road in the Town of Middleton.

Deputies say Tony Klarer of Mount Horeb was driving west on Mineral Point Road when he crashed into another car turning southbound on Caribou Court. Klarer’s car ended up in a ditch and he ran from the scene.

A deputy followed fresh tracks in the snow and found Klarer hiding in some shrubs near a residence on Betsy Lane about a quarter of a mile from where the crash happened.

He was arrested and booked into the Dane County Jail for OWI-5th Offense and Hit and Run. The sheriff’s office says his blood alcohol level was .14%.

The driver Klarer hit and a young passenger in a car seat were not hurt.
