What’s going around: Depression

(WKOW) — Winter is officially here, and that may leave you feeling a little down.

Health professionals say they have been treating more cases of depression recently.

Joana Huibregtse, a nurse practitioner at Unity Point Health – Meriter’s Middleton Clinic, says people with depression typically feel down or hopeless and have little interest in what they normally would.

If those symptoms continue more than half the time for two to three weeks, Huibregtse offers the following treatment options:

  • Exercising
  • Eating healthy
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Talking to friends and family
  • Meditating
  • Relaxation breathing

Huibregtse says if those treatments aren’t helping, it’s time to seek medical attention.  You may need to talk to a therapist or be prescribed medication.  Also, if you or someone you know are planning to harm themselves or others, get to the ER immediately.
