MONROE (WKOW) – A teacher in Monroe got a $25,000 surprise Friday morning.
Northside Elementary’s Sarah Compton received the Milken Educator Award at a school assembly.
She teaches fifth grade and was recognized for her “Student Stock Market,” which uses hands-on learning to teach kids critical thinking and economic concepts.
“I was completely shocked,” Compton said. “I thought this was just to introduce the new state superintendent. So when they started talking about a teaching award, I didn’t even consider myself.”
Thirty-three people across the nation received the award this year.
Compton is the only winner from Wisconsin.
