UPDATE: Suspect in fatal shooting of deputy to be charged with murder

UPDATE (WKOW) — The state’s attorney for Winnebago County and the branch chief US attorney said the state and federal charges against Floyd Brown would be changed to first-degree murder and federal murder respectively.

The federal murder charge can be punishable by death, and the US attorney called that result “a possibility.”

The state charge carries a mandatory life sentence, according to the Winnebago County state attorney.

UPDATE (WKOW) — The McHenry County Sheriff’s office confirmed one of its deputies died after being shot this morning in Rockford, Ill. The confirmation comes just minutes after the department disputed a similar report from the Illinois State Police.

“We regret to inform you that shortly after 3:30 p.m. today Deputy Jacob Keltner has passed away,” the office said on Facebook. “Deputy Keltner was shot earlier this morning while attempting to serve an arrest warrant with the U.S. Marshalls Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.”

The office said Keltner “served the community of McHenry for almost 13 years as a deputy.”

McHenry County Sheriff Bill Pimm said that Keltner volunteered for the task force.

UPDATE (WKOW) — The McHenry County Sheriff’s office is disputing an earlier report by Illinois State Police that the US Marshals Service deputy shot this morning is dead. The Illinois State Police acknowledged the confusion and is deferring to the McHenry County Sheriff’s office for future updates.

UPDATE (WKOW) — The deputy shot this morning in Rockford has died, according to the Illinois State Police.

UPDATE (WKOW) — The man wanted in the shooting this morning in Rockford of a member of a U.S. Marshall’s task force is currently in a standoff with law enforcement in central Illinois.

The officer, a member of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, currently is in critical condition, police said during a news conference this afternoon.

Members of the task force were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at the Extended Stay in Rockford when the subject began shooting, and then fled.

After the subject fled, a woman was found in the room. She suffered gunshot wounds, however, police did not shoot any rounds during the incident, police said.

The suspect, Floyd Brown currently is in a standoff with law enforcement along I-55 in Logan County.

UPDATE (WKOW) — In a post on Facebook, Illinois State Police confirmed they are assisting with the active shooter situation in Rockford and have stopped a suspect on the side of I-55 in Logan County, Ill.

“[Illinois State Police] SWAT is on scene and crisis negotiation officers are en route,” the post said.

“The suspect is currently stationary inside of his vehicle on I-55 [south bound] at [mile post] 133 in Logan County.”

The post said I-55 near the 133 mile marker was shut down in both directions.

Logan County is approximately 170 miles south of Rockford.

UPDATE (WKOW) — Authorities said the suspect in an officer-involved shooting in Rockford is in a vehicle traveling away from the scene. They are not sure which direction he went.

The Wisconsin State Patrol sent out an alert to police agencies in the state asking them to look for a man named Floyd Brown. He is thought to be driving a silver or light blue four-door Mercury Grand Marquis with the Illinois license plate BF13112 or a temporary Illinois plate of 4850256.

In a news briefing, police said a task force assigned to the US Marshals was trying to serve a warrant on a subject in one of the rooms at the Extended Stay America hotel.  They said, while serving the warrant the suspect fired and hit a deputy member of the task force.  His condition is unknown.

Brown is the only suspect police are looking for.  They believe he is still armed with a rifle.

Police advise if you see the vehicle to call 911. Do not approach the car.

ROCKFORD (WREX) — A massive law enforcement presence is responding to a scene on N. Bell School Road in Rockford.

The Rockford Police Department confirms they are responding, along with several other agencies from across the area.

Police are stationed at the Extended Stay America Hotel, with media staging at Giovanni’s.
