MILWAUKEE (WKOW) — — This is the first Easter Sunday that members of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran couldn’t celebrate in their downtown Milwaukee church.

Instead, the service was held in a funeral home, where they’ve gathered every week since last May when the church was badly-damaged in a fire.

Church leaders say the recent fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris brought back painful memories for them.

“Watching Notre Dame go up on fire just brought back all the tears that we shed over our fire, a beautiful church, memorable church,” said church member Susan Obenberger.

Church leaders say they have the faith to persevere.

“Jesus didn’t rise from ashes, he rose from the tomb. But we’re very prayerfully hopeful that a place like Trinity and Notre Dame will also be rising again,” said director of Parish Education Christine Behnke.

The next construction step for the church will be May 6th when crews install steel beams for the roof.
