CRYSTAL LAKE (WKOW) — The body of missing 5-year-old Crystal Lake boy Andrew “AJ” Freund has been found in Woodstock, Crystal Lake Police Chief James Black said Wednesday.
Authorities were seen searching a rural area off Dean Street and 176th Street in Woodstock. Police have spoken with neighbors in the area to check if they had seen anything suspicious.
“It’s still kind of really unbelievable,” neighbor Patrick DeFrancisco told ABC 7 in Chicago. “When it happens to a child, it kind of hits home and it gets you right at the heart.”
In a Wednesday afternoon news conference, Black said that investigators interviewed the mother, JoAnn Cunningham, and the father, Andrew Freund Sr., after police received cell phone records.
When presented with the evidence, Cunningham and Freund Sr. provided information that led to the recovery of AJ’s body, Black said.
AJ body was found in a shallow grave wrapped in plastic.
The parents are being charged with 5 counts each of first degree murder, along with other charges. They currently are in police custody.
AJ was last seen on Wednesday, April 17 around 9 p.m. when he was being put to bed by his parents.
In a press release sent out on Monday, Crystal Lake Police say there is no indication to lead police to believe there was an abduction of the boy.
Police say Cunningham, has been uncooperative with police. Authorities say the father, Andrew Freund, spoke with detectives on Saturday.
