MADISON (WKOW) — Next week the budget writing committee plans to vote on raises for prison guards and funding for additional beds for inmates to deal with overcrowding, but there are no proposals focused on juveniles on the agenda.
Representative Evan Goyke (D-Milwaukee) and Representative Michael Schraa (R-Oshkosh) discuss their proposal to close Lincoln Hill and Copper Lake youth prisons by July 2021. This proposal comes after lawmakers passed a bill in 2018 to close both facilities by January 2021 with the intent to build smaller, regional facilities closer to inmates families.
Both discuss expungement reform and other incentives they’re looking at to reform the criminal justice system.
Plus, several states including Wisconsin are passing laws to restrict abortions. Riley Vetterkind from the Wisconsin State Journal discusses the impact the measures will have in the 2020 presidential elections.
