MADISON (WKOW) — Dozens of local kids took advantage of free fishing lessons Saturday afternoon.
Boys and girls gathered in Vilas Park to participate in the 5th annual Madison area Take Kids Fishing Day.
Each child received a free fishing rod and reel and enjoyed a picnic afterwards.
Organizers said it helps give kids a life skill that can last a lifetime.
“When they pull up their first fish, they’re all very happy to do it and they get real excited with it,” Director Dave Branson of the Building Trades Council said. “We have volunteers out here that help kids put bait on the hook and help cast that out and hopefully they catch a lot of fish.”
The event was planned in celebration of Wisconsin’s free fishing weekend.
Adults and kids can fish without a license until Sunday evening.
