MADISON (WKOW) — Thousands of people gathered in Madison over the weekend to “catch ’em all.”
The 2019 Pokémon Regional Championships wrapped up at Monona Terrace Sunday.
More than 700 trading card players and 200 video game players battled their pocket monsters for a chance at $50,000 in scholarships and prizes.
Organizers say while everyone’s heard of Pokémon, not enough people know about the competitions.
“If everyone knew there were Pokémon leagues, Pokémon leagues would be far larger,” head judge Rick Mitchell said. “Nobody really understands that there’s a game behind the trading cards.”
This was the last of several regional championships.
The winning trainers will advance to the national competition where they’ll have a chance at making it to the World Pokémon Championship.
