LAKE MILLS (WKOW) — The athlete who died Sunday participating in the Lake Mills Triathlon has been identified as Scott Beatse, 59, of Elkhorn.

Beatse is a physician at Aurora Health Center in Elkhorn with a specialty in OB-GYN, according Aurora confirmed.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden, unexpected passing of Dr. Scott Beatse, a respected and valued Aurora physician and team member,” Aurora said in a statement. “During this difficult time, our sympathy goes out to his family, friends and those closest to him. Additional counseling services are being made available to Aurora team members as we deal with this loss.”

According to Lake Mills police, Beatse went under the water while participating in the swim portion of the triathlon around 7:45 a.m.

Rescue personnel from the event pulled him to shore and performed resuscitation, but authorities say he was later pronounced deceased at Fort Atkinson Memorial hospital.

Officials say the initial investigation indicates that a medical event occurred prior to going under the water, and it is not being treated as a drowning at this time.
