UPDATE (WKOW) — The search for a child who went missing after slipping under the water on the Wisconsin River north of Wisconsin Dells is now a recovery effort, Adams County Sheriff Brent York confirmed late Wednesday.

York said a second day of searching the river with divers and boats with sonar technology were unsuccessful and different teams with more-advanced sonar will arrive to continue searching for the child’s body on Thursday.

ADAMS COUNTY (WKOW) — The Adams County sheriff says search teams have not given up hope that they will find the child alive who went into the Wisconsin River Tuesday and didn’t resurface.

Adams County Sheriff Brent York said late Wednesday morning that crews still consider it a search and rescue mission, and that they haven’t lost hope that the child will be found safe.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was notified about 6 p.m. Tuesday by the Wisconsin Dells Police Department that a child that went into the water in an area known as the Narrows and had not resurfaced.

The incident occurred near the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Natural Area in the Town of Dell Prairie.

York said family and friends were out swimming on a popular beach near the Chapel Gorge Trail.

Rescue efforts were suspended last night about 10 p.m. and resumed about 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The area of the search is particularly challenging because the current is strong, York said.

The family is from the area, according to officials.

WISCONSIN DELLS (WKOW) — Crews will be back on the Wisconsin River, north of Wisconsin Dells Wednesday morning searching for a child who slipped under the water Tuesday.

Authorities said they were called to the scene, in an area called The Narrows, just before 6 p.m.

They say the child fell under near the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Natural Area in the 4100 block of River Road, in the Town of Dell Prairie.

Rescue units from the Kilburn Fire Department, Lake Delton Fire Department, Sauk County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, Dells-Delton EMS, and Wisconsin DNR responded to the Wisconsin River.

The search was suspended before 10 p.m. Tuesday, but police said they planned to go back on Wednesday. More details are expected to be released at 8 a.m.

Not a lot of information about the child has been released at this point. We do know he is from that area.
