PORTAGE (WKOW) — UW Med Flight has a new facility, to help reach more people faster.

The team unveiled the new base at an open house Sunday in Portage at Divine Savior Healthcare.

People could tour the base, get an up-close look at the helicopter and ask questions.

Med Flight officials say the new base gives them a big advantage to get to people north of Madison.

“UW Med Flight is making an effort to move to remote bases so we can get closer to the people that we need to work with, local fire/EMS, as well as rural hospitals. It gets us closer to those places so we can get back to Madison quicker,” said Trevor Johnson, a UW Med Flight nurse.

Med Flight can now reach Rhinelander in an hour and Adams-Friendship in about 15 minutes.

Med Flight added a satellite base in Iowa County in 2016.
