DANE COUNTY (WKOW) — A number of Dane County supervisors want to rename a section of Lake Monona.
The change would apply to Squaw Bay in the southeast corner of the lake.
According to a resolution sponsored by 22 members of the county board, the name is offensive to the Ho-Chunk Nation.
The resolution says the Ho-Chunk Nation Traditional Court recommended renaming the bay to Muskrat Bay in 2005, and has recently renewed this request.
The resolution offers an alternative name: Wicawak Bay. Wicawak is the Ho-Chunk word for muskrat.
If the county board approves, Dane County would apply to make the change to the Wisconsin Geographic Names Council and the U.S. Board of Geographic Names.
