MADISON (WKOW) — The Dane County Board took the first step to rename part of Lake Monona.

At a meeting Thursday night, board members approved a resolution to change the name of Squaw Bay to Wicawak Bay.

Now, the county’s planning department will apply to the Wisconsin Geographic Names Council to make the official change. If that council signs off, the name change will still need federal approval.

At the same meeting, board members also gave final approval to an affordable housing project on East Washington Avenue.

Dane County is pairing with Gorman and Company to turn the old Messner building into “Valor on Washington.”

The building will have about 60 rental units, some of which will be specifically designated for veteran families.

The building will also have space for Dryhootch, a service organization for veterans.
