DODGE COUNTY (WKOW) — The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the theft of numerous road signs that have been taken from the town of Hustisford over the last year.

There have been approximately 20 road signs stolen, according to a Facebook post from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.

Also, road name signs, barricades and warning flashers have been stolen.

“To those who have taken these signs, please return them to the Town of Hustisford ASAP so that the taxpayers are not forced to pay for replacement signage,” read the post.

Town chair David Margelofsky told 27 News they have had to pay between $3,000 and $4,000 over the past year and a half to replace the signs, some of which have been stolen multiple times. The money they have to use is not budgeted, and is a drain on the small town’s resources.

“We have a hard enough time maintaining our roads without having to spend dollars on unbudgeted items for someone’s shortsightedness,” he said.

The signs cost between $75 and $150 each.

Beyond the financial burden, Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said removing signs can put lives in jeopardy, especially those who don’t know the roads in the area very well.

“Stealing a street sign could cause an accident, and is certainly very dangerous,” he said.

Theft totaling more than $2,500 is considered a felony in Dodge County.

“Criminal charges are warranted,” he said.

Margelofsky said they plan to prosecute to the “fullest extent of the law” when they catch whoever is behind the thefts.

The sheriff’s office would like to ask the community’s assistance in identifying where these signs have gone and who may taken them.

If you have any information regarding these thefts, please contact the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office at 920-386-3726 Ext. 8 and ask to speak with an officer.

If you observe anyone tampering with signs or removing them, attempt to safely write down the license plate number of the vehicle and contact the sheriff’s office with that information.
