MADISON (WKOW) — UW-Madison has suspended Sigma Chi, the third time the fraternity has been suspended in four years.

The university says the chapter violated the Student Organization Code of conduct by serving alcohol at an event, which violated its probation.

The UW chapter was also temporarily suspended by the Sigma Chi International Fraternity.

“We have temporarily suspended the chapter earlier this week while we investigate and we support the school administration’s decision to also issue a suspension,” Sigma Chi International Fraternity President Steven Schuyler said in a statement. “We look forward to working with the school and our undergraduate brothers to ensure that our chapter and members represent the high values of Sigma Chi and of University of Wisconsin–Madison.”

Sigma Chi has been suspended from all university activities until January 21, 2020 or until the chapter elects a new executive board, whichever is later.

The fraternity can appeal the decision.

Sigma Chi was also suspended in 2015 and 2017 for alcohol-related violations.
