(WKOW) — Dane County Executive Joe Parisi says the county is buying land to keep flood runoff from getting into the Yahara Watershed.

The 82 acre parcel of land is located in the Town of Vienna, located north of Waunakee and west of DeForest.

Parisi says the land will be used to mitigate and store floodwater.

The property will hold about 13 million gallons of water during a flood.

“If this area isn’t available to stay on, that means there would be more water flowing into the lakes and flooding.,” Parisi said. “We see Highway V which is near here flood often, so we’re trying to be as strategic as possible with our land purchases and investments we make so we can preserve the water.”

The location is a drainage area for approximately 5,000 acres north of County Highway V.
