Experts warn of email shipping scams during the holidays

(WKOW) — It’s something that comes along with holiday shopping, a flood of emails including things like purchase confirmations and shipping updates.

However, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protections (DACTP) warns scammers are out to use those types of email to their advantage.

Scammers can sneak malware-ridden emails masked as shipping alerts into your inbox.

The DACTP provides these tips to avoid falling victim to a scam:

  • Know what packages you’re expecting
  • Remember, scammers send out mass fake emails, so you could get one even if you didn’t order anything
  • Don’t open any attachments because they could have malware attached to them
  • Scammers make their emails look real. They often use the names, logos and color schemes of major shipping companies and retailers.
  • Scam emails may have poor grammar and spelling errors
  • They’ll often lack specifics about the send or the package’s supposed contents

You can find more helpful tips on the DACTP website.
