MADISON (WKOW) — New year, new you. It’s a phrase we hear again and again this time of year, but how do we make it happen?
Pat Gilles from Pat’s Gym stopped by the 27 News studio to share his “4 Pillars of Fitness” and talk about goal setting.
He said if you follow these balanced guidelines your goals will be attainable.
Pillar #1- Exercise: Create and use a workout plan that is best for your body.
Pillar #2- Nutrition: Maximize your results by knowing what to eat and when to eat it. In order to maximize the gains, an athlete has to eat with a purpose, and based upon the workouts that are being done. Gone is the myth, that you should eat only 3 meals a day. You need more fuel to support your fitness goals, and you have to vary the meals to support the types of workouts that you’re going to be doing.
Pillar #3- Recovery: An athlete must not only workout, but must also engage in activities to help the body recovery. Recovery activities, can involve structural/recovery workouts, but it is a lot more than that. An athlete has to have at least 8 hours of sleep a day. In addition, the athlete should roll out each day to break up the fascia in the body that will tend to bind up, and to keep the blood flowing.
Pillar #4- Mental Toughness: That includes stress management. In order to reduce spikes of insulin and cortisol that stress causes in your body, you have to have ways to deal with stress.
