(WKOW) — The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning consumers to be on the lookout for social security scams. The organization said they’re on the rise.

Previously, IRS scams used to the be the scams that cost people the most money, but that’s not the case anymore. The FTC said social security administration impostors have topped IRS impostors.

During its peak year in 2016, IRS scams cost people a total of $17 million. However, since April 2017, social security scams cost people a total of $19 million.

The FTC is encouraging consumers to keep these things in mind:

  • If you’re caller ID says the social security is calling, don’t trust the caller ID. The SSA will never call you out of the blue.
  • If you’re concerned a scammer is calling you, don’t give out your personal information.
  • Call the SSA if you think you’ve been scammed.
