The Janesville Craig baseball team is back on top. The Cougars knocked off defending state champion Waunakee over the weekend and have claimed the top overall ranking in the state.

The Cougars are undefeated in the Big Eight Conference with a 14-0 record, and 17-1 overall.

“It says a lot about this group,” said senior shortstop, and Michigan recruit Dan Blomgren. “Coming into this year we knew kids were going to have to step up, and they really, really have stepped up so it’s great to see.”

The Cougars have won eight straight games.

“We are a little different animal this year. Our bread and butter this year is we are pitching really good, and defending really good,” said Cougars head coach Victor Herbst. “Offensively we do what we need to do to score runs. We don’t have thumpers up and down the lineup. If we have two of those three things going everyday we are going to be in games every night.”

The Division 1 rankings from May 13:

1 Janesville Craig 2
2 Burlington 1
3 Kimberly 4
4 Green Bay Preble 6
5 Kenosha Bradford 7
6 Stevens Point 10
7 Waunakee 7
8 Hortonville 5
9 Oak Creek 8
10 De Pere 9
