SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) — A year ago, the Sun Prairie boys basketball team made it’s first appearance at the WIAA State Tournament. The Cardinals wasted no time making a second appearance. They will face West Allis Central in the Division 1 semifinals in the final game on Friday night.
The Cardinals had to rebuild the squad this season after losing all five starters due to graduation or transfers.
“Everyone just had to step up in anyway possible. Just step up and play as a team,” explains senior Alex Voigt.
Sun Prairie also had to deal with some injuries early in the season. The team stumbled to a 6-4 start before coming together down the stretch. The Cardinals finished the season by winning 14 of their last 16 games.
“The identity of this group is real simple,” says head coach Jeff Boos. “It’s very resilient. It just continues to bounce back. Whatever might be the thing that’s not working or not going well for them or they’ve had a setback, they bounce back.”
Now, the Cardinals are looking to take their tournament journey a step further this season by winning a game at state. The returning members of last year’s team say they learned from their semifinal loss to Brookfield East.
“We have a few guys who played last year and a few guys who didn’t,” says junior Colin Schaefer. “I think it’ll be good. We can help these other guys out with what they’re going to expect.”
