MADISON (WKOW) — Upset minded New Glarus kept defending state champs and No. 1 seed Roncalli in their sights for the first half, then held on for a 44-41 win in a WIAA Division 4 state semifinal Thursday at the Kohl Center in Madison.
The New Glarus Glarner Knights will play for a Division 4 state title Saturday about 12:45 p.m.
Conference player of the year Jaden Kreklow held Roncalli in check after New Glarus took a 29-27 lead into half time on a Zach Feller 3. That was the Knights’ first lead since an 11-11 tie halfway through the first period.
After a back-and-forth opening to the second half, Kreklow pushed the lead to 35-30 with a cutting drive down the lane with 13 minutes to go.
Kreklow then scored on a mid-range jumper to give New Glarus a 7-point-lead at 37-30.
But Roncalli wouldn’t go away. A 3-pointer from Lambert brought Roncalli back to 37-33.
Roncalli got within 2 twice in the second half, both times on Dan Burgarino jump shots.
Then Roncalli tied the score at 41 with an Ian Behringer 2-point-layup.
Kreklow put back of his own miss put New Glarus up 43-41.
Roncalli was forced to foul, but Kreklow missed the back end of a 1-and-1 to push the lead to 44-41.
Kreklow was fouled again after a Roncalli miss, but came up short on and missed the front end of that 1-and-1, giving Roncalli one last chance to tie.
But with six seconds left, Roncalli failed on two attempts from three, sealing the win for New Glarus.
Kreklow led all scorers with 21. Zach Feller added 13.
Conference player of the year Chombi Lambert of Roncalli was held to 12 points.
